id Software's games have always pushed the boundaries of 3D graphics in games. From the early engines of Wolfenstein 3D and the landmark DOOM, they have aggressively pushed forward, often beyond the power of contemporary home PC systems. Many gamers reluctantly upgrade when id games release -- as they are often unable to play them without doing so. id's new title DOOM III is no exception. Quake 3: Arena, their previous title required a graphics accelerator to play, considered a bold step at the time. DOOM III will require a card at the top-end of the performance range of the best nVidia cards, preferably the (very expensive) latest iteration of the GeForce series. With some of the most ambitious rendering effects yet seen in 3D games, this third DOOM title could usher in a new era of realism in 3D game graphics, as long as everyone is content to totally upgrade their machines if they aren't fast enough. | ||
