The later half of the 1990s was all about the World Wide Web. The concept that a user could connect to an arbitrary computer on the other side of the planet amazed us all. These new capabilities began to usher in a new era of computing that is of the same magnitude as the shift from character-based interfaces to the graphical user interface. In each case, these new technologies drove massive user adoption and the creation of enormous business ecosystems driven by technological innovation. As the Internet matured, businesses began to rely more and more on the concept that disparate systems could connect to each other. In the early days, this really was about connecting people (using personal computers) to big computers (servers) through the browser.
