Articles like this usually start with the word "imagine." "Imagine you come home from work and your PDA automatically synchs up with your desktop PC." They list dubious Buck Rogers-ish functionalities, such as your fridge beeping you when the milk expires, and then, such articles acknowledge the technologies "may" arrive "soon." "Well, that soon may be reality, according to (industry expert)." And the rest of the article explains how the current situation is nowhere near that, but, hey -- anything could happen. This article will try to avoid the come-on and let-down pattern. The subject is Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity), a local area networking system that may be the buzziest wireless technology of 2002. It is certainly owning the year, so far. Corporate vertical markets have been adopting it for some time, and it is picking up steam in the enterprise. Public-access hot spots are being rolled out and aggregated by a number of companies. But when will Wi-Fi hit us where we live? | ||
