Microsoft starts a new era of software upgrades for business customers on July 31, when it replaces all previous upgrade paths with Software Assurance, an insurance-like program in which a customer pays in advance for the right to upgrade. Most customers who purchase Microsoft software through volume licensing will pay more for upgrades in the future, whether they sign up for Software Assurance or not, a reality that has drawn heavy fire from both customers and critics. | ||
