It was May 20, 1997 in New York and it was intended, via an elaborate demonstration at the Sheraton Hotel, to show that Windows had become a bonafide scale-up operating system, capable of handling a billion transactions a day and more. But the carefully configured mega systems on display that day, assembled with all the internal know-how available to Microsoft and its hardware partners, were unusual if not impossible to find in real-world data centers. Now, we're beginning to hear about super-size Windows systems that live up to the high expectations set seven years ago.
