Sun lands big Telstra contract | |

Leading Australian telecommunications provider Telstra has chosen Sun Microsystems to supply hardware and software for its next-generation online services and data network, the companies said on Sunday. One source close to the deal said the multiyear agreement would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, but neither company commented on the size. Melbourne, Australia-based Telstra aims to create an integrated network of Web services, so that a user could get stock quotes or check e-mail from a wireless personal organizer, cellular phone or via a high-speed Internet connection, the companies said. Communications networks today are generally independent, so that a single carrier's wireless and broadband networks have difficulty working together. A common platform is also attractive for developers who can create one program that can be used throughout a network, instead of customizing programs for different devices, Sun executives said. | ||
