You don't have to wait for high-definition hardware and software to arrive on the scene. Artisan Home Entertainment and Microsoft are offering consumers a taste of high-definition DVD right now.

Artisan's upcoming Terminator 2: Extreme DVD contains a high-definition version of the movie on a DVD-ROM in the two-disc set, enabling one to see the film in high definition via properly equipped computers or the right TV monitor.

It's made possible by Microsoft's new Windows Media Player 9, which boosts image resolution to what executives from both companies say is true high definition. Computers should run on the Windows XP operating system for best results.

This is Artisan's second DVD containing a second, higher-resolution DVD-ROM version of a movie. The first was Standing in the Shadows of Motown (VSM, Feb. 23-March 1). But the ROM version on that title was about 1.7 times the resolution of a standard DVD, according to a Microsoft executive. T2 is much higher, at about 3.5 times the resolution.
