While Silicon Valley stutters, far to the north in Redmond, Washington, near Seattle, Microsoft has its foot firmly on the pedal of research and development. In July, the world's largest software company, which is almost universally detested among its northern Californian rivals, announced it would raise its annual R&D budget by 20 per cent, to $5.2bn. | ||
