  Updates for Microsoft’s Windows Server Virtualization Technology (codenamed “Viridian”)

  • A public beta of Windows Server virtualization will be available with the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows Server “Longhorn” in the second half of the year. This beta will enable a broad group of customers and partners to test workloads and applications on a pre-production version of Windows Server virtualization with the final version of Windows Server “Longhorn.”

The focus for the release of Windows Server virtualization is quality and timeliness. To meet those objectives, Microsoft has made some hard decisions and now plans to defer some features to a later release. The features are:

  • No Live migration
  • No hot-add resources (storage, networking, memory, processor)
  • Limit support to 16 cores/logical processors (e.g., 2 processor, quad-core systems is 8 cores/ logical processors; or 4 processor, quad-core system is 16 cores logical processors)

These updates do not impact the schedule for Windows Server “Longhorn”, which was released as a public beta on April 25 and remains on track for release (RTM) in the second half of 2007. Microsoft remains on track to release a final version of Windows Server virtualization within 180 days of the release (RTM) of Windows Server “Longhorn.”
