The expected April launch of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows .Net Server could prove critical to the Redmond software company's efforts to expand its server business. Windows .Net Server is an operating system for businesses with large computer networks and an applications server that helps manage payroll, expense and high-volume e-commerce Web sites. It is the successor to Windows 2000. With revenue from the Windows operating system and Office desktop applications units flat since 2000, Microsoft watchers say the company's server software segment is its best hope for a third engine of growth and profitability. The segment brings in about $2 billion annually to Microsoft, according to IDC Corp., a Framingham, Mass-based research organization. Combined, Windows and Office have brought in about $20 billion annually since 2000. | ||
