MSN 8 Asks Users to Pay for Some Online Services
Time: 16:00 EST/21:00 GMT | News Source: Gartner | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Microsoft's decision to move MSN to a partial for-pay model reasonably extends the trend in which content and application providers seek financial legitimacy by countering the popular mid-1990s assertion that information ("content" is the more common term in 2002) "wants to be free." The precipitous decline in competition among Internet information and interaction hubs makes the for-pay business model more defensible than ever — the critical issue here.

So here's a story. I have a Dell Inspiron 8000. In the past month several little and not so little problems have come up.

My video driver decided to stop driver-ing last week twice. I was thrust into 640x480 and 2bit color. That was ugly, let me tell you.

My DVD-ROM drive isn't too fond of CD's. Sometimes it spins and spins and doesn't actually give me access to the files. That's annoying, I can tell you. It's OK with DVD's most of the time. DVD movies are always fine. DVD data disks aren't always.

The black plastic thing in one of my USB ports is gone. I must plug and unplug my USB InteliMouse at least four times a day. I guess it doesn't surprise me.

The left control key pops out of the keyboard quite often. It's got to be one my most used keys. What can I say, I copy, paste, and cut quite often.

My power cord, kind of got a short and stopped powering. That got annoying really fast.

So...I called Dell and explained my woes. When I heard that the motherboard would have to be replaced, I fretted since I'd have to send the laptop in. The phone dude said that wasn't the issue at all. They'd send a tech in the next two days to fix all of my problems. Oh yeah, the best part, there is no cost to me since it is part of my supprt plan.

I should also mention that after I found the right phone number to call, I was on hold waiting for all of 3 rings. Even after telling me Windows XP wasn't a supported OS, he told me a happy place to go on Dell's site to get all the driver updates. (That is a little more than illogical. If the OS isn't supported, why do they publish drivers for that OS.) I just started downloading updates - video card, sound card, and a BIOS update. Mr. Laptop is cold booting and logging in in about a mintue now. Revive from hibernate takes about 40 seconds.

I've got to find the name of the support package I got with this laptop, because I want all my future machines to have it too.

Dude, they're fixing your Dell. :-)
Dell support is one of the main reasons people like them so much. You probably got on-site service. I think it's standard, but varies in time period depending on the plan you choose (like 1-3 years). Check Dell's system config & order page for the different plans they have. You might recognize yours.

The tech ment that that particular system wasn't supported by Dell when running XP (It more than likely was tested with and sold with a different OS). Dell doesn't make the drivers, though. The component vendors do. In this case the vendors had updated drivers that support XP. Dell most likely uses the same vendors for many of their system components. If the drivers were available from Dell's site, they probably have newer machines specifically tested with XP that use the same (or similar) components. The support guy was just pointing you in the right direction so you could possibly help yourself. Although,, you were on your own (basicaly) as far as any software compatibility problems that may be due to the OS. Not supporting the system with XP basically means that XP wasn't available when the system was originaly sold, and they didn't test it in that config later because they probably had a new model that replaced that one.

Here's a link to their support services: http://www.dell.com/us/en/gen/services/service_systemUptime.htm
You probably have At-Home Service.

Dude, I love my Dell. Every person who has asked me in the last two years about getting a new laptop or desktop heard from me "Just get a Dell." I'm about as pro Dell as I am pro Microsoft.

Support. Ah, that makes sense. It got it with Windows 2000, since Windows XP hadn't come out yet.

I've got a premier support plan. (at least that's the domain I goto for stuff premiersupport.dell.com) It's next day, on site, full replace for three years. When I was talking to the phone guy last night, he said "Did you drop it?". That made me laugh. My poor laptop gets a lot of use. It also travels all over with me. It's like my 24/7 machine. I don't even use my desktop directly. I remote into the desktop from my laptop.

I just typed a long email to a friend of mine. When I came back to AW to post, it was strange the sentences didn't capitalize themselves and that words didn't get themselves spelled correctly. I love the autocorrect features in Office. They save me so much time.

Did you drop it? ;-) j/k

I haven't used it before, but heard it was pretty good.

http://www.envivio.tv has a free (fully ISO compliant) mp4 plug-in for WMP, Real, and QT.
They also have mp4 videos you can use to see what I was talking about regarding Apple's lack of full mp4 support. When you try to play them with QT (without the envivio plugin), QT will say the video contains technologies QT doesn't support, or it won't recognize the file as a real mp4.
So much for mp4 support in QT, huh? And with free mp4 CODECS like this one (they're others too) available for WMP, MS doesn't need to support mp4 directly. With this plug-in, you can also see how bad mp4 actually looks (worse than WMP8 in a lot of cases), even at high (>1000k) bitrates.

The plugn also works with mp4 AAC audio files. Except the content on Apple's site is linked to Quicktime to prevent the use of another player.

This is the iCal thing I mentioned earlier:

"...we have to admit we put no specific efforts in ensuring perfect
inter-operability in this version, but we definitely aim at being
better citizens in future releases."

Nice PR, Apple. And they are an open source advocate too <snigger>.

Oh, I've never dropped my laptop. I haven't punched it or kicked it either. And, nobody else has done those things.

lol, I hope that wasn't sarcasm. :-)

No, I was serious. I almost laughed when the guy asked that.

sodablue just realized that I passed him. He thought it happened today. He didn't realize that it happened Friday morning. Tee hee.

#638 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/21/2002 12:08:11 AM
lol. I was checking out /. today and noticed that in one thread sodablue was branded an MS troll again.
Some people just can't take the truth.

lol, did you read the site vs. mhfm thread? http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?HeadlineIndex=13102&Group=1

#640 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/21/2002 9:26:52 AM
Yeah, I read that. mhfm needs help. Communist-minded Democrats? The Democrats haven't been the ones basically saying it is unAmerican to question or criticize the government.

Murder by association if you are Pro-Choice: What does that make the Pro-Lifers who are associated with those in the group who have hit lists of abortion doctors that have aided murders and bombers in killing doctors and "innocents"?

A bunch of other things I'd rather not reprise. It's bad enough with the ABM nuts on this site. Now we have to deal with OT/controversial issues nuts as well. </sigh>

The thing that bothers me most is that he claims some authority from God to do it. At least the discussion (other than the few linked images which were deleted) was pretty civil. You'd never have a 100 post thread with beeyp or sj or anyone else so disagreeable and not have swearing.

#642 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/23/2002 12:26:13 AM
Wow, I've defended sj twice today. How odd!

Wow, bro, you're almost to 1000.

#644 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/23/2002 5:15:50 AM
Yep. A couple more days of good posting ought to do it.

#645 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/24/2002 1:06:23 AM
If you aren't too busy tonight, you should take Todd up on his offer to me to have a post party. I've got to wite some hefty code or I'd be joining in.

#646 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/24/2002 1:44:09 AM
Some other time, perhaps. Sorry.

#647 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/24/2002 2:33:48 AM
Didn't seem like Todd was up to it either.

MSN Messenger 5 is pretty cool.

#649 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/24/2002 8:37:57 AM
Aren't they also supposed to have a Windows Messenger 5 release?

#650 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/24/2002 11:42:46 AM
As I understand it, it'll be released soon.
