GNEWBIE GNOOK: Conserving Precious Resources Q: I have a slower computer, and need to conserve resources for different things, as some things slow down when I try to do them at the same time. What I would like to do is have different boot-up profiles for the things I do, like one for Internet stuff, which would turn on networking and the firewall, and another for working with graphics, which would turn off everything except the stuff needed to make graphics work, and a third for running a defragger (and doesn't work in safe mode). Any ideas on how to set this stuff up in XP Pro? A: I had the same issue at one time. Mind you, it was on Windows ME without all the XP options. For me it was all the stuff that loaded at startup that I only needed for Internet use. The result was less than 50% Resources free even before I started anything up. I got around this by creating two batch files: one to start all the programs I needed for safe Internet use (I was on a dialup), and another to stop them when I was finished. | ||
