  Palm Unveils Tungsten Handhelds

Palm is expected to unveil Monday the first handhelds of its recently announced Tungsten product line, which is aimed at the enterprise market.

For enterprise users, Palm is finally introducing the PalmOS 5.0, rewritten for powerful 32-bit RISC microprocessors, such as Texas Instruments' 175-MHz OMAP1015 ARM chip, along with a TI digital signal processor. The TI chip will be in both of the new Tungsten devices.

The combination of chip, operating system, and a Secure Digital format expansion slot will let Tungsten devices handle bigger applications, more data, and integrated wireless communications options. It will also have better graphics and multimedia features than current devices based on PalmOS 4.1.

Palm is expected to show two Tungsten devices. One is a high-end device focused on handheld applications. The other is a GSM/GPRS smartphone, similar in concept to rival Handspring's Treo device. This latter device, in addition to the TI 1015 chip, also has TI's GSM/GPRS chipset for wide-area cellular connections.
