To some extent, the Sysmar is intriguing because, at only $200 or so, it comes with the innards of a respectable conventional computer: a 10-gigabyte hard drive, a 52X CD-ROM drive, 128 megabytes of memory, an 800-MHz processor, networking capability, and an optional modem.

Four slots - three for PCI cards, one for an ISA board - and three bays make the computer as expandable as almost any Windows machine on the market.

Only a floppy drive is missing, left out to minimize costs and because the people selling the machine believe the floppy is becoming outdated.

What makes the machine really different, though, is the Linux operating system, generally considered the greatest threat to Windows.
