Microsoft's decision to move MSN to a partial for-pay model reasonably extends the trend in which content and application providers seek financial legitimacy by countering the popular mid-1990s assertion that information ("content" is the more common term in 2002) "wants to be free." The precipitous decline in competition among Internet information and interaction hubs makes the for-pay business model more defensible than ever — the critical issue here.

I don't know about Richard. I responded in the thread where he was talking about Linux v. Windows.
XBL is great so far. Just as I expected. Voice masking is cool. You wouldn't know this reference because it comes from a recent TV show on Cartoon Network called, "What Ever Happened to Robot Jones?", but I can make my voice sound like the characters in that show, especially the Dad robot that always says everything 3 times like, "Listen to your mother. Listen to your mother. Listen to your mother." It is like the synthesized robotic and computer voices of the 80s, or like the digital Keyboard/Guitar talker effects in songs (most done by Roger Troutman) like "Computer Love"(The Gap Band, I think) or "California Love" (Dr. Dre/Tupac). I can also make it sound like the "bit" in Tron that could only say "Yes" or "No", or like the robot in Berzerk that says, "Intruder alert, Intruder alert. Chicken fight like a robot."
It has a variety of masking presets and you can customize it as well. Though I only mentioned robot examples, you can do almost anything. It's great how it functions in realtime, also. Only had one occasion of gameplay lag, and I think that had to do with the person's connection. Although it could have been server load. Overall though, no problems. I think it's well worth the $50/year.
I haven't responded for a while because I'm working on some schoolwork. Ever use a program called Maple when you were in school? It's similar to Mathematica or Derive.

Hmm, I'll have to look into XBL. What's the scheduled release date?
Schoolwork? Oh yeah, I remember that. Never heard of Maple. I hope it isn't another UNIX acronym like ELM or PINE.

No. It's Maple because a Canadian company makes it (Waterloo Maple). Located in Waterloo, Ontario Canada. Although it is a pain sometimes because it's built to be cross-platform (*nix/Windows/MacOS X). When you don't use the native APIs of a platform, it just makes some things frustrating. Overall, it's ok though. http://www.waterloomaple.com
Release for XBL is November 15. Exactly 1 year after XBOX launch. You can get a starter kit that comes with the headset mic, XBL upgrade DVD, and (possibly) a game, for $50. This entitles you to a 1 year subscription. You will need a credit card to register, however. They use it to verify your ID (so they can ban you if you don't play nice), and so you can download any premium content if desired (there will also be free content). Also, you will automatically be charged for the following term when your first term is over (unless you cancel the service).

Yuck, they made their site using DreamWeaver. Is Maple written in Java, then?
Thanks for the XBL info.

Yeah, I thought about whoring the other posts :-)
It's not written in Java, but you can use Java, C, or Fortran for external calling and code generation to interface with it's math engine to build custom apps (Mapelets). Hopefully, they'll add .NET to the list.

It's funny looking at the Maple box and seeing Java as the only language with a TM next to it.

Kudos to you, bro! I have a goal to reach 2500 before sodablue does. I have 118 to go. He has 9. Are you up for some intense chatting/posting tonight? I've got to get some milk so I can be full of chocolate (I just love Nesquick!) to make it through.

I hope Byron doesn't notice. I think it'd be really cool if we got to 1000 posts on this thread.

84 to go, but I'm running out of steam. I guess I could find a thread and talk to myself for a while, but that's too easy.
