Oscar Gives 'Moulin' DVD a Boost | |

"Moulin Rouge," this year's only best picture Oscar nominee available on home video, saw DVD sales rise 160% from the week prior to the nominations, in turn sparking a 1,400% jump in retail re-orders, according to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. With a 40% increase in video rentals, overall consumer spending on the rental and purchase of the DVD and video rose to $3 million for the six days ended Feb. 17, Fox estimated. That brought total spending on the video to $70 million, surpassing the $59 million in domestic box office gross. The DVD has sold 2 million copies. "Consumers have really embraced this film, whether it's in theaters or in homes," Fox spokesman Steve Feldstein said. "It continues to enchant, delight and outperform." "Rouge" will get two more promotional pushes before the Academy Awards are announced March 24: A multimillion-dollar TV marketing campaign for the DVD began this week, with another due in mid-March, when the videocassette is repriced to move from rental stores to the sales market. | ||
