  Microsoft Begins Licensing Hardware Technology
Time: 08:05 EST/13:05 GMT | News Source: ExtremeTech | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Microsoft said Wednesday that it will now license several of its hardware-specific technologies to other manufacturers. The software giant said that it will license three technologies: its "U2" interface, which autosenses either a PS2 or a USB connector; the "tilt wheel" found in its latest keyboards, and a "magnifier" feature that zooms a specific area of the screen. Although Microsoft is obviously known for its operating systems, the company's first foray into hardware came with its introduction of its mouse and keyboard line, followed by joysticks, other peripherals, and the Xbox console. Microsoft discontinued its SideWinder PC joystick line in 2003. Meanwhile, Microsoft has also reportedly sought to control the market for its Xbox 360 game console by striking licensing agreements with companies like Mad Catz, a peripheral manufacturer.
