Who trusts Microsoft's Palladium? Not me
Time: 09:39 EST/14:39 GMT | News Source: ZDNet | Posted By: Byron Hinson

The words 'Microsoft' and 'trust' only really seem to fit together with the help of an 'anti' somewhere in the middle. I find it somewhat odd therefore, to find this particular company proposing the development of a 'trusted computer platform'. Trusted by whom? Not by me, that's for sure. It's not an altogether new idea, of course. In 1998 Intel came under fire for its processor ID idea, which enabled software -- or a Web site -- to quiz your CPU for its unique 64-bit serial number. This CPUid, which is built into almost every Intel processor since the Pentium III, is now switched off by default after initial outrage at the discovery that Web sites and applications could record it without the users' knowledge. Now, you have to download a utility from Intel here and switch the CPUid feature on. Not that any software or Web sites actually use it.

sodajerk - I'm always willing to offer a helping hand.

I just have a hard time reading through your FUD.

#27 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 6/27/2002 6:53:16 PM
Helping hand, soda? Now you want to shove your hand up my ass!!!? No thanks, baby!

Need help reading? Oh, that's right, it wouldn' matter--you can't argue this point. It's only MS shills who are saying that we should ban discussion and questions of their vaporware.

#28 By 2332 (165.247.1.237) at 6/27/2002 7:46:53 PM
#30 - Your "discussion and questions" are mostly beging the question, as you seem to already have it set in your mind what the answers will be.

#29 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 6/27/2002 8:13:34 PM
Not at all, RMD. I've taken two tracts--1. saying what I don't want, and 2. posing questions which need answered.

You could either explain to me why I am wrong not to want these things, or you can answer my questions for me.

Don't see how taking a stance is begging the question, it's taking a stance. You just can't create an argument so you are telling me you know what I think and that I will never change how I think. That's pretty fscking pathetic.

No visio, had to use mspaint...

After all RMD, the original dispute was: people cannot criticize and question what isn't released yet...

That's a prime example of begging the question; this is a discussion board, we can debate whatever we want. But obviously, those who want to protect their softy-virgin ears can't take it and can't argue with those critical of the situation.

I shifted this debate by saying that it was idiotic to say that criticism shouldn't come until Microsoft releases it, and I explained my reasons. You can attack those reasons if you'd like.

I then provided my concerns and my questions. I'm not presuming anything because my concerns and questions aren't dependent on the answers that we don't have from Microsoft--they are valid whether or not certain features appear in MS's vaporware.

By the way, isn't preannouncing a product five years in advance without knowing what it is and how it works as an answer to a problem, begging the question? Isn't Microsoft rigging their own security question and providing their products as the answer? I think so.

And isn't presuming that I will not change my mind, thereby allowing you to dismiss the discussion, begging the question? Yes.

#32 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 6/27/2002 8:32:35 PM
Still avoiding the topic, soda.

#33 By 3339 (67.116.252.161) at 6/27/2002 9:47:59 PM
Oh, maybe I see where your problem is RMD: "it doesn't matter--you can't argue this point" --that's begging the question, but that was just a personal taunt thrown at soda. I think it is pretty fscking pointless to try to argue that criticism cannot be offered until a product is released though, but anyway... I don't consider that my argument here--that's throughout the discussion.

But please... Ha, Ha, Ha!! I can't believe I didn't call you on it right off: "Your [...] are mostly beging the question, as you seem to already have it set in your mind what the answers will be. " Ha, ha, ha!! Speaking of begging the question!

#2 i dont know how from my statement u'd think i'm an anti-MS sheep. I am anti-MS-Sheep, but not anti MS. there is a BIG difference there. Unfortunately this forum is full of MS-sheep. I administer and use both MS server and workstations as well as *nix ones. I dont see too many Linux-sheep here. Those hang out over at Slashdot & Co.

#35 By 135 (208.50.201.48) at 6/27/2002 10:15:13 PM
tgnb - Usually when you use the word sheep you mean people who just blindly follow without thinking. That's certainly not the case here, as we're quite well aware of the competition and have simply choosen the best product.

sodajerk - Yep. Some topics just aren't worth wasting electrons.

#36 - "Ha, ha, ha!! Speaking of begging the question!"

How is what I said begging the question?

#37 By 2332 (165.247.5.19) at 6/28/2002 2:27:05 AM
#28 - I suggest you examine what you've done for humanity before you start calling one of the greatest men who ever lived a "Butt-Head Astronomer".

If only there were more people like Carl Sagan.

Correction: I just read about the suit, and I apologize, Apple did indeed use the BHA code name.

At any rate, I think Apple should have changed the name as soon as Sagan asked. They obviously picked his name because they had great respect for him (and rightly so), but no matter their intentions, they should have abliged him without requiring lawyers to get involved.

It really ticks me off when people critize Sagan, because more often than not, what they attribute to him is a falsehood or stupid unsubtantiated rumor. The things that do stick (and there are a few... read "Sagan: A life in the Cosmos" or "Sagan: A Life" for more info), are VASTLY out weighed by his many contributions to humanity.

If each of us contributed even a small fraction of what Sagan accomplished, the world would be a FAR better place.

I recently bought two DVDs, Cosmos and Contact. Cosmos makes me almost giddy - I hear Sagan speculate about things which would, in the near future, be confirmed (or at least agreed upon), or when I hear a classic Saganism that has been quoted so many times it's almost part of our every day lexicon. And it brings a tear to my eye when "For Carl" comes up at the end of Contact.

I miss ya Carl.

sodablue: When I used the word sheep thats exactly what i meant. Maybe you are too caught up in the MS vs (insert some OSS name here) "battle", to see how sheepish most pro-ms comments made here are. But hey this forum is called ActiveWIN, so thats what you'd almost expect, isnt it?

#39 By 1868 (68.9.46.160) at 6/28/2002 7:51:35 AM
To SodaJerk,

Some of us come to activewin, to have a lively discussion not to read a long over-drawn discussion between you and the rest of the world and your world view.

Stop wasting your time(and more importantly MY time) with all of these inane posts. Its very annoying to have to scroll through all of them, let alone even try to understand and comprehend them(and what would the point of doing that be??)

Well anyway

STOP POSTING and instead go out and get a lady friend!!!

#40 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 6/28/2002 11:04:03 AM
tgnb - Maybe it's just that the arguments are over your head? Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it isn't true.

#41 By 7797 (63.76.44.252) at 6/28/2002 11:08:48 AM
sodablue: Why are you putting words into my mouth that I never said? Where did you get the idea that i dont understand something? You took my entire statement out of context it seems.

#42 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 6/28/2002 12:02:37 PM
tgnb: Not really. You claimed that when you read the posts here all you see is sheepish comments. I'm simply explaining to you that is probably because the discussions are over your head.

#43 By 7797 (64.192.164.165) at 6/29/2002 3:01:37 PM
sodablue: well u shouldnt assume things like that.
