Here we go again? Shortly after the beta of WinXP Service Pack 1 was released, locking out installations using leaked activation keys, a workaround with what appears to be a replacement key began circulating on IRC. We can therefore look forward to a repeat of the Windows Product Activation wars that were waged during the original XP beta, as crack and block alternate until the product actually ships.
At which point, barring the invention of an entirely new and uncrackable system, the final crack will be unveiled. At the moment, the SP1 beta won't install on systems using at least one widely-leaked activation key. The workaround circulating appears to include a replacement key, but given that this could be easily blocked by Microsoft in future builds, its main importance is that it explains a procedure for deactivating the system and entering a new corporate key. Which could even be a genuine one. You never know.

Drestin,
That's a wee bit arrogant, don't you think?
I use Windows XP Home at home on my Client machine, and I ASSURE you it is a legally bought copy.
And I also assure you that WPA has been a pain in the ass for me.
It has broke THREE times so far. Each time there was NO hardware change. I just rebooted, and up came the window saying I had to reactivate. Twice, it did so over the internet fine, but there was never an explanation as to why it happened.
The third time it happened I had reinstalled my NIC card driver because it had become damaged during a System Crash (yes, XP does crash hard sometimes). After installing the driver again, upon reboot I was presented with the activation wizard again. This time, it would NOT reactivate by Internet and I had to call Microsoft.
Just because people complain about WPA it doesn't mean they are pirates. It might be that they have actually had trouble with it, like I have.
Thank You :)

If you don't like the cost of the OS or it features then don't upgrade. That solves it all.

Stubear (and others),
The IP thing would never, ever work.
It would be complicated by:
1. Travelling users.
2. Users working at home.
3. Users that work at multiple offices, each with their own IP bank.
4. Users that work at Client Sites.
It would be a mess. I can't fathom any system that would work based on IP address.
And, frankly, I don't think they will monkey with the Corporate builds. Microsoft is in enough hot water with it's Corporate Clients right now over several things, not the least of which is Licensing 6.0, which is not going over as well as Microsoft thought.
Corporate IT resources are stretched thin enough just trying to keep working corporate images and software builds working and on thousands of users machines. The last thing that would be tolerated is further intrusion into the corporate IT lab.
I just don't see the Corporate scene changing much in this regard.
Corporate IT is starting to push back at Microsoft these days. Hard. And I say GOOD for them! It's about time that the IT world stood up and said "Hey, wait a minute here. I am the CUSTOMER in this relationship!".
But, I could be wrong :)

#59, I am happy to pay the prices I did for my PhotoShop products. They paid for themselves straight away ;-).
