This is just a suggestion, but someone should save a copy of this and other related threads, and when Latch, myself, and others bash the next version of desktop Windows, saying how crappy it is compared to Vista, you all can pull these postings out and snicker at all of us. I recall clearly the growing pains XP had in the early days, with people complaining about games and apps that ran fine on 9x, but didn't work on XP, hardware with no XP drivers, constant software compatibility updates, etc. Five years later, all those complaints are gone. Now all we have left are the constant security issues, but those are not going away any time soon regardless of OS being used, or application being used, due to immature and lax coding and testing practises currently in use. |

OK, unhappy vista user. I have also been using vista since beta. Here's my experiences, following your 20 point criticisms. Let's take a look..
1) All the hardware I've ever attached to my Vista laptop has worked perfectly, with zero problems. 2) Yes, that does get annoying, but you CAN turn it off, which I did, with no problems. 3) I have not had any problem with drivers. Some companies have not written drivers for their products..that is the 3rd party problem, not Microsoft's problem. 4) I can set up my power options any way I want them. 5) The start menu actually is similiar to XP start menu. However, you can get a free start menu from vistastartmenu.com which blows away any other start menu I've ever seen. 6) My vista machine, with over 75 gbytes of system and application software, actually boots faster than my XP machine with the same load. It boots in about 1/3 less time. I've used both. 7) Aero takes some resources, but not nearly as much as you contend. If I run stardocks dreamscape desktop animated background, my cpu actually runs about 6% more than normal. Without that application, my cpu runs about 2% more. You forget that all of Aero's processing is done on the graphics card, NOT the cpu. Read the specs! 8) You are right on this one, but look at all the versions of all operating systems. I think the dust will gradually settle down to one: ultimate. 9) I have no horrible graphics...my graphics is better with Aero than I ever had on my XP machine. In fact, I have NEVER had a graphics display problem...ever...with Vista. 10) Where are you looking...outer space?? I find it just as easy or, in most cases, easier to find things than XP. I use my computer 16 hours a day and have never had problem finding things. 11) I don't use vpn, so I can't make a comment about it. You could be right...or wrong, for all I know. 12) Software incompatability is not a MS problem. All my software ported over just fine to Vista, with the exception of Acronis. They came out with a new build which solved that problem. I have no compatability problems (all office products, all Adobe products, flash, software and html development, tons of freebie programs like ifranview, faststone, avg etc etc. Where's all this incompatability? I haven't found any yet. 13) Firefox runs better than IE7 on ALL operating systems, not just Vista. 14) ALL sidebars are resource hogs. I got rid of mine in XP, for that very reason. 15) I don't have readyboost turned on...I don't need it. 16) I use media center..with live TV/ streaming videos and dvds. My picture quality is superb. 17) I haven't experienced any problem with minor hardware changes affecting system startup. Maybe I've just been lucky. 18) I have a right-click "open with". I've always had it with vista. I use it all the time. 19) Check with Netgear for a solution. 20) I had indexing turned off in XP and still have it turned off in vista. I don't have any problems with search. |

I don't have to save any posts. The same pattern has played itself out every time there is a major OS or software release. People bitch and whine about drivers, performance issues, lack of compatibility and other minor and major issues. Early adopters become paying beta testers. Their feedback fixes issues. Market share increases and drivers become widely available for hardware or people just replace old hardware when drivers are not available. Drivers mature and performance issues are worked out. This is not just an issue with MS but with every software company to one degree or another. Vista is just unlucky that it has an extremely high profile and wide adoption. What is amazing is not that this happens but that people are surprised it happens. Like I said the problems are easily avoided. If you don't like the problems don't be an early adopter. |
