Why Microsoft must abandon Vista to save itself | |

While Vista was originally touted by Microsoft as the operating system savior we've all been waiting for, it has turned out to be one of the biggest blunders in technology. With a host of issues that are inexcusable and features that are taken from the Mac OS X and Linux playbook, Microsoft has once again lost sight of what we really want. As we're more than aware, Vista Ultimate comes at a premium. For an additional $160 over the Premium SKU price, Ultimate gives you a complete backup and restore option, BitLocker Drive encryption, the ever so popular Windows Fax & Scan, and the "Ultimate Extras." But what started with a promise of "Extras" by summer, quickly turned into an apology from Microsoft and the eventual release of DreamScene and Windows Hold 'Em (among others) today. And while each of the "Extras" runs just fine, Microsoft's "Extras" blunder is just another reason why the company must abandon Vista before it's too late. | ||

#24: Well said! There are also those of us more in the middle who give credit where it is due, and criticism where it is due also. Microsoft engineers make some great software. And some of it is released before it is completely baked. That is no different from any other IT shop, but Microsoft is not a normal, nor small, company, so a few rules that would apply to you or I don't necessarily apply to a publicly traded company. And some of the fault belongs to the bean counters at the top, not the engineers who would probably have preferred to test and fix more bugs before it was released to the public. But, that is often the decision of managers, not developers. As a fellow developer, I can completely relate to that concept. My biggest problems with Microsoft are in the area of behaviour as a corporation, more so than towards any given product.
#25: "Notable exceptions occur when I'm attacked by particular users in this forum." Recognise yourself in that statement? I now expect this thread, which has been interesting so far, to decline sharply into flame wars now that you have appeared, as is normally the case. |

#26, I think you're right, Mystic - I think there is too much emphasis all around on keeping score. I think that if companies do great work and make great stuff and do so in a way that is decent and good and honest, that business success is a simple and natural by-product.
I built my businesses around that thinking and grant it, it takes longer, but the strength of the companies is deeper and more enduring - like an athelete that has trained harder. Maybe it is that MS got so big that it is harder to control. If that is the case, they need to perhaps think about giving a lot more power to more junior leader and a lot less power to senior lawyers and accountants. Great observation about developers and owners - I always side with the guys, by the way - my job is to get them what they need. If that is more time, then that is what they get. If it fails, it i smy fault. If it succeeds, then the credit goes to them. That is the way it should be - take care of the men, and they will take care of the mission. |
