Microsoft said its third-quarter net income fell 39 percent, but that's still better than expected. The software giant credits strong growth in the personal-computer and PC-server markets. Its third-quarter net income dropped to $1.32 billion, or 12 cents a share, from $2.14 billion, or 20 cents a share, last year. Microsoft's earnings included legal and stock-based compensation charges totaling more than $2 billion.
