In one of the most overlooked cool things at the PDC (in my opinion, anyway), the new Command Shell that will be in Longhorn blew me away when I saw it. I walked up to the booth asking if unix-like file aliases would be in the new shell, and was given a demo by the team that had my mind racing. | ||

#45 - Ok then as you seem to never accept anyone elses views if they differ from yours, maybe this could help, a: apple never said they were not releasing patches, b: they never said 10.3 was the only place the fixes would appear, c: one article was all it took for this to spread everywhere without any back up to the false rumours.
perhaps read back over the articles in question and getting the facts straight would help you. It wasn't even the patch that was released the other day that was for 10.3 only that was in question. Should we go over all of Microsoft's bad points and backings down in things they were or should do, no of course not, because no one gives a crap here. Byron - I'll simply point out that the argument parker made about Apple being shamed into fixing it is the same thing Microsoft critics say about Microsoft at various times.
This is the problem with irrational debate, it brings out the worst in people. And yes, I realize that parker is a master at that. |

While it is very obvious that I've disagreed with parker in the past about certain topics, his reasoning seem dead on to me in this case. One thing he forgot to mention is that @stake stated that Apple said it would only provide a fix in Panther, but not previous versions.
"David Goldsmith, director of research for @Stake, a security company that found four of the vulnerabilities, said it was his understanding that Apple was not planning on patching the flaws in earlier versions of the software. 'In my initial conversations with them, they said they weren't going to fix 10.2, but I wouldn't be surprised if they change that,' he said. #50 - hmmm i've put up with yours before, why should it be any different? Just because I say I think you speak rubbish a lot of the time in digs at what people say isn't to be argued, you've done it to me since I said I had a Mac and because I disagree with you on lots of points - that should be individualism, but instead you and parker never do that, its just dig dig dig.
The difference for me being I know when I'm wrong and I apologise for being nasty, but don't apologise for saying I feel you talk nonsense in these boards to wind people up somtimes, and i'm not the first person to say it and doubt i'll be the last. #51 - it sure does, and yes he is - it's a shame the comments boards are brought down by people like this as about 75% of the time nothing is on topic. If ever there was something to add to the TOU then this is it - i'll have words and see if we can get it edited so we can finally rid these comments boards of all the off topic and childish posts. #56 - Of course they weren't - if they were then they would lose nearly all of their "following", they aren't that stupid, and for you to come to that view from snippets of quotes from other companies is a bit silly, if we did that for microsoft we'd think even worse of them than we do now. The likelyhood (as is happening) is they are going to charge for certain updates that are in panther and newer OS's, if you don't have it. Like they have done for iChat (due for Windows soon too now), #57 - sure is, if it's a TOU violation, half the posts here would vanish from most regular users here. I haven't read all the comments before now, so please forgive me if this has already been stated, but it appears that the shell scripting language for this new shell is C#-ish, if not complete C# scripting.
Yet more evidence that Longhorn is almost completely .NET now. A majority of the Win32 API was replaced with OO .NET libraries in Longhorn and they rebranded it WinFX. |

Also, FSUtil/MakeLinkes, etc use the new Reparse Points feature of NTFS5 (Win2k).
These are true hard links in the Unix sense, not symbolic links. And yes, there is a big difference. It seems that WinFS will support both hard and symbolic links as well as many new features. |

How is that any different to what microsoft has done in the past? Did you complain then? probably not, but then again I've never even spoken about the upgrade costs so this "example" has nothing to do with anything i've said. I'm up for any factual complaints about anything, its just sad to see so many people here who are mindlessly going at people for having different views and use different machines. But gladly the TOU will be changing now to stop these sort of comments spoiling what has, in the past been a good site. |

#63 - almost a good comment - should be in the apple section of the site though really. I'm not someone who has complained about how either Apple or Microsoft release there OS's or how often - as long as there are enough new features I feel that companies should release them more often.
The Washington post article seems to be relating the fact that each OS X release seems to have had a lot of new features and enhancements with each release, something Win 98, SE and didn't have much of in the same timespan..i could be wrong there though, but that’s how it seems to me. Difference for longhorn being that it will contain massive changes, after thats done i'm sure we will see more than 1 release every 5 years once again. I have no problem with that. Some Mac users have said Microsoft is taking a long time to get longhorn out because it needs to drastically change its looks, this is on the spot, but I'm not one of them, I couldn't care less what the reasons are as long as they come out with something excellent in longhorn. Also your "HA! You have to wait X years for your next version of Windows, but WE get to pay for new versions of MacOS every year!! So neener neener!!" comment doesn't seem to be the talk i've heard from any mac user - all i've seen is that by the time longhorn comes out 10.5 or whatever should be released and only then can someone fairly compare the two - that seems like logic, not being an ass. So I'm glad to say your comments haven't been rubbish just perhaps a little over exaggerated, but again they are in the wrong part of the site, so try using the Apple section instead as you seem to like talking about them more than Microsoft, then the sites can get better. |

I'll give you all an insight into how i'm feeling right now about the comment boards etc. This is part of an e-mail i'm sending out to various users and people who e-mail in.
For me the site has turned into a poor shadow of itself from what it was over a year ago, I've stayed away from it for most of that time, but just recently it has gotten worse than ever...I've been telling various people the same thing in e-mails and on the comment boards, from Mac users to Windows users - unfortunately people then assume I have something against Windows when I tell people it is wrong or in the wrong place - once again people know very little about me and shouldn't comment. I mean - how would you feel if users on your very own website you created turn against you simply because you use another machine - yet forget about the fact I still use Windows, have nothing against Windows and still post tips for it etc, just because I prefer something they don't, doesn't make me wrong. I now get constant e-mails from people who say they won't comment currently because comments on topic get lost in the off-topic comments and in all of the arguing because some people feel that they rule the comments boards, this in my view should change, despite the fact that more comments help a sites funding. This site used to be about helping users, now its about moaning, *itching and complaining about users. Something no site should be.
