techlarry - "Apple has finally made the whole thing digestible for the most part"
going from FREE to $1/song isn't digestible... I don't care if it has an apple, microsoft, or real logo on it. No thanks.

Apple iTunes for PC Review:
Kudos to Apple for releasing this. I know some people prefer the itunes interface so this is awesome for them. This finally brings a decent free client to the iPod folks too (Don't care much for musicmatch). Although I dont think you can beat Notmad Explorer.
Music Store:
I tried out the music store and purchased a coupla songs. I kinda like the dollar buy and then I have actual rights to the song. Apple did this system right and others should do similiar for purchasing songs. However I dont think the quality is good enough for a buck. Thats a not a knock against apple or anyone but pretty much everyone with a music download service. 1 dollar should get me high bitrate windows media professional lossless. Also consider this, it would cost me over $1000 to fill up an iPod. Thats ridiculous. I think I am much more in the camp of monthly fee gets me access to everything ala xm radio or pressplay. I think a hybrid between the Apple Music store and one of the subscription services is better for my tastes. As far as browsing the music goes the one thing that bugs me is the fact that when you start playing a song and browse elsewhere it stops playing the preview of that song. Speed of browsing the catalog was good. And I found a pretty good selection of music.
Speed:
The application is incredibly sluggish for a media player. On the PC both Windows Media Player and Winamp play files with no noticeable slowdown. Resizing the iTunes window or scrolling seems very sluggish in comparison. They did a good job at carrying the sluggishness over from Mac OS.
Interface:
Put simply I dont like it at all and its purely my subjective opinion. No offense to anyone some people like it here (just like some people like the way H2's look). This is windows and it doesn't behave like a proper windows app at all. Granted most media players have their own interface, but they at least give you the ability to skin the application which iTunes doesn't. So if you don't like the interface you are out of luck. Brushed metal just doesnt do anything for me. I dont like the fact that I cant just play files but I have to add files to the playlist first. I would say I am an advanced WMP user and there is just not enough beef in here to manage all of my files.
WMA Support:
Ok my music collection is pretty much all WMA's sans a coupla hundred mp3's i had when i started out my collection. Where is the WMA support? I can't play or view anything about them. Unfortunately this is a deal breaker for me. No WMA support and this app is pretty much useless to me which is sad to say.
Conclusion:
Good first version of Media Player from Apple on the PC. There are a lot of issues here but not a bad first effort. Its not going to get any usage time as other alternatives right now are better. Ill take a look again once iTunes gets WMA support.
Peace,
RA

As an added update after trying to close iTunes it pegged out my CPU at 75%-80%. Looks to be buggy still. That might have been why it was acting so sluggish. Not sure why it decided to use my CPU so much.

#50 - remove the ipod service from services in control panel if you don't have one, takes up a lot of memory.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a wma plugin for QuickTime? If so that makes that an invalid complaint. I know there is an OGG plugin and many others. It does take up quite a lot of memory though and is a bit sluggish on my poor old system, but hopefully they will optimize things in future versions.
Sodajerk, the burning engine is provided by Gear so it should work with most if not all PC burners on the market.

Thanks #53 no problem with memory here...
I have 1.5 gigs of ram so I am not worried about a paltry 30 megs of memory. After disabling the iPod service the app remains sluggish although the memory footprint is now smaller. Also again after trying to close the application it pegged my cpu close to 100%...
Skyfrog as far as WMA support goes its a very valid complaint. How can I use the player if it doesn't play the majority of my files! Point me to a plugin and I will test it out.
Peace,
RA

If you like independent, lesser known (non-mainstream) music, want a wide variety of music, and want open usage terms, give http://www.emusic.com a try. EMusic was one of the sites that pioneered this type of service back in 1998.
Up until just recently they allowed unlimited downloads for 9.95 per month. Still an awesome service for a person who appreciates more than what FM radio feeds you.
Corpus, if you were hanging on Apple's nuts any more, you'd be their jock strap. There's no wonderful innovation there...

#46,
The fact that you can't make the move from illegal to legal is not my problem, that's YOUR problem.

What format are the songs you want to import? If they're WMAs, it won't work.

I'm findind this to be VERY buggy.
If the volume is lower from within iTunes then it makes a nasty little hissing noise, even when not playing any music, though, except when, say, I click and drag the size of the sidebar, it just quits making the noise.
The visualizations run VERY slowly (even when I set it for low res and a small size), except if I move my mouse, then the visualization is no longer jerky.
Overall, the application performance just sucks.
It takes between 30mb and 50mb of RAM when running, as compared to WMP's 5mb-9mb.
WMP is MUCH MUCH better for managing the music, at least as far as I've seen so far.
There is so much need for improvement in this app it's not even funny. Once again Apple proves that they do not know how to hire good Windows programmers.

Mr. Dee,
If they are WMA Lossless, there's a command-line tool that you can use to convert the WMAs to wav, then you can convert the wav to MP3 or AAC.
Windows Media Audio 9 Lossless to PCM Converter
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/utilities.aspx
WM Encoder info below. (Post #69)

Certainly they need to work on the CPU and Memory problems that iTunes is having with some peoples setup, (it only uses 8mb on mine) but there are enough people with the problem to make me hope they fix that quickly.
But saying it WMP manages music better doesn't make sense.

I think that WMP presents the data better than iTunes does, but that's just my opinion.

To add to the free options (if you want to go through this much trouble), if the WMAs aren't Lossless, you can convert them to Lossless using Windows Media Encoder, then use the Lossless to PCM converter to convert to WAV, then convert the WAVs to MP3 or AAC.
Windows Media Encoder
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx
has a batch script you can use for converting entire directories (wmcmd.vbs in X:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder -- run the script at the command prompt by typing cscript wmcmd.vbs /? which will give you possible arguements)
This should convert the WMAs to WMA Lossless (executed from WMA Encoder's directory)
cscript wmcmd.vbs -input [WMA Input File or Directory] -a_codec WMA9LSL -a_mode 2 -output [WMA Output File or Directory]
When you specify the Input and Output File or Directory, just insert the path, don't enclose the path in brackets.
To convert the resulting Lossless files to Wav, use the Lossless to PCM Converter and this syntax (executed from Lossless Converter's directory -- default: X:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Tools\WMAL2PCM):
wmal2pcm [input file or directory] [output file or directory]
Once that's done, you can encode the wavs to mp3 or AAC using the tool of your choice.

A lousy WMA to another lousy format like MP3? Do you mean to say a low bit rate WMA or are you dissing WMA in general?

I find it very annoying that iTunes doesn't seem to want to go out on the net and gather data about songs, album art, etc...

You can at least 1500 mp3's onto a 4gb DVD... that's not a small amount.
