Sorry, Linux desktop fans: When it comes to desktop operating systems, it's currently a two-way race between Windows and the Mac OS. While Microsoft's market share dwarfs Apple's, the GUI diehards have keep each other busy for nearly two decades—and end users have regularly reaped the benefits of that competition, thanks to upgrades designed to top the competition's features and performance.
This week, the cross-platform debate's been hot and heavy. Is Microsoft racing to catch up to Panther, the Mac OS X upgrade due to roll out at June's Worldwide Developers Conference? Should Apple be running scared after Microsoft's demos of its Longhorn OS at last week's Windows Hardware Engineering conference?

So, this wonderful world of cheap Windows is actually $5 off an upgrade price if I take some store's closeout off their hands? Whatever.
Can you agree that $0-189 over two years is hardly different than $0-229 over three years? Hmmm?

Newegg is a reliable site with a great return policy.
See post #30 about the $50 price.
Here's an example of a license-only purchase (this is if you've already got an OEM disc and want to get a similar license for another computer, though Open License would be cheaper in the long run)

"You can get additional licences (no media) for $50+. A quick check shows $58+ currently." I don't know if I'm just confused or if you are getting more obscure and slippery on purpose. Is it $50 or $58. I can get 5 OS X license of $199. So which is cheaper?
Newegg seemed like a pretty sh1tty site to me.
I don't care about chasing around your little insignificant OS deals.... They aren't amounting to much savings, and I'm not gonna run out and purchase XP all of a sudden.
Maybe that's rude, I take it back. I'll even check out your link. Okay? In fact, I did--and the price is in fact $58. Great--your $50 price is $58, and your big savings when buying hardware is $5. Good coupon clippin', dude!
Will you do me the favor of answering whether or not 0-189 over 2 years is significantly cheaper than 0-229 in return?

You may be paying another $129 (more or less) come September (or thereabouts). This further increases the cost of the Mac. I admit that that cost, spread out over a few years can be somewhat trivial, but the XP user (if an adopter from the start) gets 4 years of updates (minimum, assuming they go straight to LH upon its release) for just the initial purchase price of $0-189.

So you have to wait 4 years for a big upgrade.
I've already had OS X for 2 years.
I get three (or four depending on how you cut it) big updates.
Over a 4 year cycle...
When the average upgrade cycle for hardware is 3 years...
Which (if I upgraded hardware) would result in a FREE system... that's not tied to that box by the way...
(And we don't know what Apple is going to do--they've done full upgrades only going back into the 7,8, and 9 days; they've done upgrade pricing; they've done free upgrades.)
And I can (get this) NOT buy an upgrade and just wait a year (without HAVING to WAIT FOUR YEARS) for a maximum of $40 to $140 more for SIX YEARS of OS X!!!
You're right--Apple is bleeding me dry!!

Due to Apple's short cycles on OS X, XP still comes out cheaper:
For a 4 year period:
OS X - $199x3 = $597
XP Home - $58x4(4 licenses) +$10(hardware) + $93(license w/media) = $335

Just wanted to add that I do like Apple's license pack. It'd be a great deal if MS had something similar combined with their longer cycles/support offerings.

This series of posts has assumed that you upgrade each time (Windows and MacOS). The argument about not upgrading is frequently made about Windows/MS software, but people always say you're forced, so my examples assume everyone upgrades.
There are arguably big updates on XP. MS has already shipped major updates to several XP OS components, with more to come. The way MS is currently posturing themselves, Windows users can expect a stream of updates in the future for the life of XP/Server 2003, probably moreso for LH/Blackcomb. Windows won't exactly be (and hasn't been) stagnant for 4 years, and the updates are free (sans Plus Packs). The major stuff, DX, .NET, Windows Media, Networking, hardware support, etc., have had, and will continue to receive free updates.

Jerky boy No, that's not the point. OS X adoption in the Mac world is occuring at about the same rate as XP is in the Windows worldp
good point Jerk!
10, 000,000 X 10%= 1,000,000
1000 X 10% = 100
*substitute the real numbers and it becomes even more embarrasing for Apple*
n4cer, don't bother trying to get water out of the rock that is SodaJerks head.

TCP/IP was included in Windows 3.11 aka Windows for Workgroups.

"Why do people come up with this absurd notion that Mac OS X is the future, its going to kill Windows and all the other nonsense, its the purfect gui blah, blah?"
Well, until you brought it up no one here had mentioned any such thing... Just trying to start some crap?
Both OS's have their strenghts and weaknesses. That's why I use BOTH. It's not a Sin, ya know.
In fact, I'm typing this in IE on a Windows Server 2003 machine I just finished setting up, and the iMac sitting next to me isn't upset in the least. Really :)

Dave:
It depends, Microsoft did not release a WMP8 for any OS except XP, they also have a separate line for Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger (WinMessenger is for XP and up only).
Apple didn't charge for the upgrade to 10.1 (which, if they had, would have been outrageous, as that should have been the first release version of OSX).

Honestly, the UI is the only that that OSX has going for it over Windows, and even then the UI gets annoying fairly quickly.
However, if you are a Mac user and not using OSX and you have the hardware to run it, you are missing out on a lot... MacOS 9 is like a glorified version of Windows for Workgroups.

JWM: The Windows group has said that the 'Unix guys' have us beat in some areas, such as the need to reboot the system after installing a patch, etc... but Windows beats the Unix guys in other ways.
