sodablue--I'll wait for the information on the French graves that were desecrated. I don't doubt that it may have happened, but I would like to know why it happened.
What I had read (from a Canadian news source) was that it was a gravesite of Allied soldiers in the French coastal town of Etaples. I did mention in my original comment that the apology was made to the Brits, as the particular slogan "Dig up your rubbish, it's contaminating our soil" was painted on the grave of a British soldier. The comments were both anti-American and anti-British. The French Prime Minister did apologize, but as I said, I can totally understand bitter feelings towards the French with what is viewed as such an ungrateful action. It could have been a bunch of drunk college kids for all I know, but I introduced it for discussion, not to promote retaliatory anti-French displays.
Now about Parker's statement... sheesh. Do I have to respond to every comment ever made that has even a tangential reference to my points? Do you want me to respond to that? Fine--look at #17. There has been a lot written about France not wanting the cultural or political dominance of the U.S. and that their "stand against the U.S." at the U.N. was also an attempt to gain their own dominance in the future of the EU, but I never think or have said that they're out to destroy us. Again, stop putting words in my mouth.
As for the feelings of the French... honestly, I have a lot of contacts in France, and in many ways they don't care a whole lot about anything anyone says about them. "Freedom fries"--I don't think they're losing any sleep over that. I don't like the comments coming from the U.S., but I understand from where a lot of the resentment is coming. What's so hard to understand about that?
I really don't see how any of my comments have been insincere or in opposition to unity. Why not read my comments as they are? I suspect you read them with gritted teeth, expecting some sort of Republican rhetoric (again, I'm not a Republican, alright?) or attempt to inspire moral outrage. For this article brought up quotes and evidence for discussion... I didn't say them or make them up myself.
