CDR Labs has posted another great DVD writer review, this time of the LG GSA-4081B Super-Multi drive which supports 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD-R/DVD+RW, 2x DVD-RW, and 3x DVD-RAM writing. So is this a complete package? Here's a snippet from their review:
For the most part, the GSA-4081B performed as expected. While it wasn't as fast as some of the other drives when writing to DVD+R media at 8x, it had no problems holding its own when writing to DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW media. LG's new writer was also surprisingly quick when reading DVD's. While there were a few cases where its seek times got a little high, the GSA-4081B was able to read single layer data DVD-ROM's at 12x and most other types of DVD media at a respectable 8x.
Unfortunately, the GSA-4081B's CD reading and writing performance wasn't nearly as impressive. While most of the 8x DVD writers we've looked at have had maximum transfer speeds of 40x, LG's new drive read pressed and CD-R media at 32x and CD-RW discs at 24x. The GSA-4081B didn't do quite as well as I would have liked in our DAE tests either. The drive ripped audio CD's at only 24x and created a few data errors in CD Speed's advanced DAE tests. The GSA-4081B's writing speeds were also a little slower than the competition's. While its 24x CD-R and 16x CD-RW writing speeds are alright if you need to write an occasional CD or two, LG's new DVD writer probably won't be replacing your CD-RW any time soon.
