Microsoft's decision to move MSN to a partial for-pay model reasonably extends the trend in which content and application providers seek financial legitimacy by countering the popular mid-1990s assertion that information ("content" is the more common term in 2002) "wants to be free." The precipitous decline in competition among Internet information and interaction hubs makes the for-pay business model more defensible than ever — the critical issue here.

Discussion topic: what is the significance of Microsoft Office going to XML as a file format for Word docs. Will this really enable better interop with XML Web Services. I don't think so, but I'm looking for other opinions. The link above has has some posts on the matter.

Was it "Blue Seed"
"Momiji Fujimiya is an ordinary girl who finds herself the target
of some monsters. She is saved by Kusanagi, an extraordinary man
who has an agenda of his own. Momiji is the direct descendant of
the Princess in the legend and Kusanagi's mission is to protect
her from harm (since her death would banish the monsters)...until
the proper time when she can be killed 'safely'. However, he seems
to be taking some liberties with his mission...
Momiji is saved, in turn, by Kunikida. He is the head of a Special
Forces team (called the "Land Development Agency" :-)). She doesn't
know it then, but her life is just about to get a LOT more
complicated...
At school, Momiji resumes her normal life, hopefully leaving these
wierdos behind. This isn't to be since a monster has spotted her
and figured out who she is. Its attack kills some people and
destroys much of the school. The intent is to capture and not to
kill her.
Despite Kusanagi's interference, the monster traps Momiji behind a
"ceramic field"...the only way she can be killed without consequence.
Kusanagi is trapped himself and cannot help her. An attack from
the Special Forces team freezes the monster and frees Kusanagi.
In retaliation, the monster attacks, but Momiji tries to save him.
This results in Momiji being infected with an aragami jewel (the
Blue Seed of the title). With it, she can detect other monsters...
Kunikida's team was formed to protect Japan from the reemerging
monsters. With him is his 2nd: Takeuchi, the weapons expert from
the SDF: Koume Sagakuchi, the forensic expert: Matsudaira and
the computer expert: Yaegashi. Momiji becomes an honorary member
(and somewhat of a mascot) so the team can keep an eye on her,
study her aragami and protect her."

I'm not sure if that's it or not, n. I'm looking around for images to see if I can find the clownlike thing that I'm seeing in my head. Thanks for the link!

Don't think that's the series I'm looking for. But 'Blue Seed' does look very familiar. Hmm.
