Microsoft would like laptop makers to site small LCD displays on the outside of their lids, so users can see key system information without opening up, or booting up the system.
Sriram Viji, a program manager working on the auxiliary displays at Microsoft, demonstrated the idea at a recent developer event and revealed that MS was hoping to incorporate the technology into Longhorn, the next version of Windows.
He offered some interesting suggestions as to what might be displayed - battery power, email arrival. All useful stuff to know if your laptop is shut up and powered down.
