Just as standards are important for voice on wireless networks, they are also important for data on wireless networks. It is critical for applications to be able to interoperate across devices and networks to deliver an experience that is consistent and valuable to end users, and to enable software developers to create applications and services that address both horizontal and vertical markets. Microsoft Corp.’s contribution to and active participation in standards builds on more than 20 years of commitment to creating software that interoperates with other software and collaborating on Internet standards and specifications. Through its work with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the software industry on the XML standard, Microsoft has been working on software and Internet standards that have taken into account the unique needs of their use over mobile networks and are immediately transferable to this emerging wireless data market.
