Cable Internet service providers said Monday that they intend to stop charging broadband customers a franchise fee, based on a recent decision by the Federal Communications Commission regarding the classification of cable broadband service.
Last month, the FCC reclassified cable broadband as informational lines instead of cable lines. The agency also ruled that franchise fees cannot be levied on revenue generated by cable Internet services.
Franchise fees are charges placed on cable operators by local franchises. The charges often are passed on to cable Internet subscribers.
