As part of an ongoing national campaign against software piracy, Microsoft Canada Co. today announced the results of a recent piracy sweep in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Approximately twenty area resellers were identified as allegedly engaging in unauthorized hard disk loading of software onto consumers' computers. In order to ensure GTA resellers are providing customers with licensed copies of its software, Microsoft worked with private investigators who visited approximately 80 GTA resellers suspected of hard disk loading. Hard disk loading is the installation of software onto a computer's hard disk without providing the customer with the requisite license, media or accompanying manual or documentation. The investigators made controlled purchases of new computer systems and Microsoft took action against resellers who allegedly installed unlicensed Microsoft software and, in some cases, sold accompanying counterfeit software.
