Microsoft Research Cambridge (MSR Cambridge) flung open its doors in a 'radical move to bring technology innovation' to 50 local sixth form students. We were invited along to join the science, maths and IT students in a day devoted to lectures on cutting edge technology and some hands on action with the very latest software!
First off, Managing Director of MSR Cambridge, Dr Andrew Herbert, set the pace of the day with a rousing opener to a male-dominated teenage audience. MSR Cambridge, he informed, was set up in July 1997 with just 3 researchers. It was the Corporation's first research laboratory to be established outside the United States with Cambridge a natural location due to its reputation as a centre for educational excellence coined with it's well-nurtured silicon valley (sic) community.
