Digital Bits has posted a short note from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel creator Joss Whedon in reponse to the growing disappoinment over the upcoming Region 1 release of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 4. Unlike in Regions 2 and 4, where Season 4 was released in anamorphic widescreen, the Region 1 release will be full screen.
So Fox Home Entertainment asked Joss to make a comment on this and (hopefully) this subtly amusing note will quell the tide:
Gentle Viewer:
No doubt you are looking over this scrumptious BUFFY package and exclaiming "No @#$%ing letterboxing? Whutzat? GYPPED!" Possibly you are breaking things. Please calm down. The fabulous episodes of BUFFY (and that one crappy one, sorry about that, seemed really cool when we wrote it...) were not shot in a widescreen format. They were shot in the TV 4 by 3 ratio. Now I'm a letterbox fanatic, but not just because I crave th' wide. I want to see the whole screen, as framed by the director. The BUFFY's I (and others) shot were framed for traditional TVs. Adding space to the sides simply for the sake of trying to look more cinematic would betray the very exact mise-en-scene I was trying to create. I am a purist, and this is the purest way to watch BUFFY. I have resisted the effort to letterbox BUFFY from the start and always will, because that is not the show we shot. This is. So enjoy! Stop breaking things. You're getting the best presentation of -- let's face it -- the best Television Drama since MATCHGAME '79. Bye for now!
Sincerely,
Joss Whedon
So there you have it. Now, while I think Joss is a genius, I have to admit to ordering the widescreen versions from overseas. While I haven't watched every episode, the ones I did were framed very nicely - and having them displayed in the correst aspect ratio on my widescreen HDTV is what makes me happiest. I hate seeing Buffy stretched!
So I'll definitely pick up the R1 release in June, but I'll be keeping my R2 and R4 sets as well.
Incidentally, "Hush" in widescreen looks phenomenal. Even if its not the aspect ratio that Joss originally framed for, it looks gorgeous.
