While Microsoft continues to face a few legal challenges to its business practices, the software giant is obviously feeling confident enough about its fate in the courtroom to turn its attention to protecting its competitive edge. The Redmond, Wash. company is lobbying hard, both in the United States and abroad, to keep government agencies from switching to free, open-source software, particularly the upstart Linux operating system. Several countries -- including China, India and Germany -- have recently embraced the open-source software platform for some government entities.
