Microsoft's decision to move MSN to a partial for-pay model reasonably extends the trend in which content and application providers seek financial legitimacy by countering the popular mid-1990s assertion that information ("content" is the more common term in 2002) "wants to be free." The precipitous decline in competition among Internet information and interaction hubs makes the for-pay business model more defensible than ever — the critical issue here.

the difference between beeyp and nom is that while nom uses clever satire which, if you're in the mood for it, can make you laugh, beeyp is just a crude fool.
how is it possible that someone who knows anything about development (and he must with the stuff he's spouted off about linux), has never heard of visual studio. vs is only the undisputed best ide on the planet. even folks that hate microsoft (like james gosling) will concede that. grr.

i think the max number OSes i had on a box at once was 5.
2k pro beta
2k server beta
nt 4 server
nt 4 workstation
98
i quickly dropped the nt's soon after i got the 2k's. i had to keep 98 for a bit to get online, because there weren't 2k drivers for my modem at the time. that was sad when i had to go from 2k to 98 just to get online.

I currently have 4 installs of Win XP Pro and one of .NET Server. When I feel masachistic (sp?), I sometimes install a flavor of Linux or Unix. Plan to try Lycoris one day, but don't see much point since I never use Linux long, never could connect it to a network (well, maybe once, I forget), and Lycoris is mainly a Linux distro that tries to emulate XP (or whatever the current version of Windows at the time).
Speaking of emulate, I also have an emulator that runs MacOS 8. Don't use it for anything productive, though. But it runs faster than a real Mac (At least the few I've used) :-)

i installed red hat 5. something and mandrake probably 6 or so. i had a class where we were bound to code only for unix. grr. i learned that coding for unix and coding for linux was not the same. so, i dropped the "use" of linux after about three days and went back to windows. i found it was easier to code in vc++, ftp my code up to a solaris box to compile and test, than it was to do the work from some unix based code editor like emacs, vi, or KDevelop. it was from that time that i learned to loath unix/linux. they just seemed silly to me. it's like someone coming to me with nt 4 and saying, "i've got this great OS and someday it'll be better than yours" well, yeah, someday nt4 will become xp, but i've already got the better thing, so why downgrade? linux someday will offer what xp already offers, but by that time xp will be two versions after longhorn. i just don't see linux catching up. and unix? well, unix was never meant to be a desktop OS.

For testing different things. Also, one took the place of the last Linux install I had.
Oh, and 1 replaced XP Home after that beta was over.
1 is a testbed for things like DX Beta of some application betas, and for just screwing around with. (I call it th .NET Testbed) :-)
The last one (really the first) is for my main installation.
I used to test 2 OSes at the same time (actually 3 counting .NET) XP Pro and Home. So now I keep at least two extra partitions in case that happens again.
The other one had a standard XP RTM on it for testing things like DX and XP SP1. Hence 3 XP Pro installs, 1 main XP Pro install, and one .NET Server.
For those that may wonder, NO, Product activation is never an issue. :-)

lol, i just download whatever i need from msn subscriber downloads. i never have issues with product keys or activation. even if i did, i have sold so many people on windows xp or office xp, that microsoft should pay me. i work for a microsoft certified partner and 100% of our business is software for windows either on the client or server or both. i'm a vs.net man. i'm an internet explorer man. i am certainly a windows xp man. i code with the lastest public releases or betas of dev tools. quite often (though for some reason not with .NET server) i have the latest beta of the next windows. yep, microsoft needs to hire me to be one of those travelling sales evangelist guys. lol, what a job that would be!

You could be on stage doing Smart Display, CE, WM, and TabletPC demos with Bill.
Not to forget Visual Studio, of course.

<clapping> Thanks Bill! <more clapping> Now that Bill has told you the reason that Microsoft is so excited, let me tell you why you as developers are going to love VisualStudio .NET 2005!
