Steven Bink made some notes on the DPM 2007 product during the Microsoft Management SUmmit: DPM v2 is a promising product, read the facts below:
- Application level backup VSS writer for: Exchange 2kx, SQL2kx, Sharepoint,v2,v3,2007, full cluster support.
- 15 minutes sync
- D2D2T (disk to disk, disk to tape)
D2T (disk to tape)
- 512 shadow copies! (not for files though, this is still 64 copies, cause the "previous versions" client UI does not support more then 64)
- Native tape suport with major tape robots, and stand alone drives
- Exchange backup at storage group level, restore storage groups, or individual stores or even individual mailboxes! (bircklevel) This keeps the benefit of Exchange single instance storage, which isn't the case with current bricklevel backup solutions.
- System State, and so Active Directory
- Bare Metal Recovery! they did not say/show how though. This is not in beta2 yet but wil be in the RC release.
- Full Power shell support
- Protect servers across trusted domains
- file/folder exclusions
- encrypted files
- Media Encryption, encrypt tha backup on tapes, funny fact only 20 % of data that is encrypted on fileservers ends up encrypted on tape, so 80% of this data is unencrypted on portable media!
- Virtual server support, backup VHD's as of Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1
Backup apps inside VHD!!! like exchange, SQL, files No downtime VSS consistant inside VM VSS outside (VHD vss writer) For non win2k3 VHDs: Offline backups: pause VM, VSS shadow copy of VHD, unpause, copy blocks to VM replica.
- Eseutil can run on DPM to check integrity of exchange backup!!!, no load on Exchange production
- Sharepoint document protection is still to be determend, but this is Microsoft's goal
- Sharepoint support, protects the whole farm, DB's Files, IIS front
- Agent deployment options
agent pre installed in image SMS 2003 SCCM 2007 GPO WSUS
