Microsoft and Intel are among the tech firms that have introduced a new specification designed to extend the reach of Web services beyond the PC to a broader range of devices.
Dubbed "WS-Discovery," the spec works with existing protocols to support information-sharing among computer peripherals, handhelds -- such as PDAs and mobile phones -- and consumer electronics products.
The objective is to weave Web services together, providing greater flexibility for enterprises currently using a number of disjointed components in their systems and enabling more pervasive use of Web services. The protocol can operate on a wireless or wired local area network.
