MSN 8 Asks Users to Pay for Some Online Services
Time: 16:00 EST/21:00 GMT | News Source: Gartner | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Microsoft's decision to move MSN to a partial for-pay model reasonably extends the trend in which content and application providers seek financial legitimacy by countering the popular mid-1990s assertion that information ("content" is the more common term in 2002) "wants to be free." The precipitous decline in competition among Internet information and interaction hubs makes the for-pay business model more defensible than ever — the critical issue here.

i knew ie had issues with png's, but i've never taken the time to learn what they were. the images look pretty spiffy!

the quality of this site has really declined recently. i think you and i and el and rmd and sodablue (why didn't i just use some commas) should go and form a newsgroup site community thingy. that way we could have intelligent conversation and even learn from each other (what a concept!) while we discussed the latest in technology.

i must say i get quite a laugh responding to nom's comments, but his satire doesn't really help the site. fools like beeyp and soda* (other than sodablue) absolutely detract. well, sj does make decent comments every so often, but his crudeness and overbearing (and often severely logically flawed) arguments far outweight is good comments.

guess i'm just getting tired of feeling like i was in third grade again. "go bots are better." "no transformers are better" "are not" "are too" "you're a jerk" "nuh, uh! you're a jerk" that's what i feel like when i read this site. grr!

Here's what I was gonna use for my normal profile pic. If you like it better, I can make one named Bob.
http://home.earthlink.net/~wjtigner/n4cer-icon-2.png

The original MS version of this was named Thief (Like I said, It was a security demo).
You can see it at http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Demo/1.0/WXP/EN-US/mssecurity.swf

From a message sodablue posted yesterday, I think (other than SJ and maybe 1 or 2 others), he is the other sodas, having fun with the trolls.

#257 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:22:28 AM
with a name like n4cer, the thief is definately better with you

Check secured access on that flash file for your pic.

#259 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:24:31 AM
i thought he was joking about that. hmm.

#260 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 9/25/2002 12:24:48 AM
I thought about keeping it named the thief :-). But I changed his name to n4cer.

#261 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:25:00 AM
why can't you pause flash movies? grr.

#262 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:26:00 AM
ah, you tell it to not play. interesting that they didn't go with something standard like play/stop and pause

#263 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 9/25/2002 12:26:08 AM
You can. Click on the left arrow at the bottom for a pullout menu.

#264 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:28:59 AM
how silly of me. in such an obvious location. i think it should be a default from the right click menu. macromedia should provide that.

#265 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:32:14 AM
wow, i don't know you could set a password that controls SAM's startup. that's pretty nifty. i wonder what the lockout policy is on that.

#266 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 9/25/2002 12:32:35 AM
I agree. Did you decide on a pic(s)?

#267 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:36:16 AM
i think i prefer bob to bob w/ computer

#268 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 9/25/2002 12:36:29 AM
Probably the same as encrypted FS. :-)
I thought about using that feature when I saw it. Doesn't that mean you need a Windows machine to access the files? You can't, say, read the files on a protected drive from within Linux or another OS normally capable of accessing NTFS?

#269 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 9/25/2002 12:40:11 AM
Save the pics you like btw, I'm gonna take them off the server in a while. I should just host these from my computer, but I'm not on my normal partition and the uptime may be a bit sporadic when I'm beta testing because of frequent build installs, etc..

i don't know. i know very little about admin-ing an xp box. if my laptop were stolen, no great IP would be lost. if my desktop were hacked, that's also not really a big loss. i have two firewalls (one hardware, one software) and that's really all i worry about from a security prespective

#271 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:42:02 AM
i already saved them ;)

#272 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/25/2002 12:42:32 AM

#273 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 9/25/2002 12:43:22 AM
I see what you mean about beeyp (Just saw that thread). I'm surprised he didn't say WINE is not emulation, lol.

this is an old article from aw hardware. it just figures that the guy would be from UT, an eagle scout, and a computer nerd. Lol!
