Japanese software maker Square Co said on Friday its online game "Final Fantasy XI" became unavailable for some users when too many fans tried to access the site to play the hit title over the Internet.
Square launched the online game, a version of the popular "Final Fantasy" series which have sold more than 38 million copies globally, on Thursday for users of Sony Corp's PlayStation 2 game consoles.
It declined to say how many people had signed up for the online game or how many were unable to access the site.
"We think that too many people accessed at the same time but we are still examining the cause of the problem," said a Square spokesman.
With Japan's declining birthrate and thus shrinking game population, game software developers have been looking at online games as a new source of revenue.
