Microsoft Makes Donation to Peru | |

Microsoft Corp. is providing about $550,000 in money, software and consulting services to the Peruvian government for educational and "e-government" initiatives. In a news conference Monday, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo announced the contribution, Microsoft's first in Peru. Toledo, elected last year, made technology and education a key focus, and initiated conversations with Microsoft, said Sandro Marcone Flores, executive director of the Huascaran project in Peru. Marcone Flores downplayed whether the contributions could conflict with a proposal under debate in the Peruvian government. That proposal, by Congressman Edgar Villanueva, would obligate all public institutions to convert exclusively to open-source software, in which the underlying code is available to anyone wanting to revise or customize it. | ||

Realist - Curious comment. Aren't you one of these "Software deserves to be free" proponents? If so, it's not expensive at all to give away software because it is supposed to be free to begin with.

Realist - More curious comments "attempts to crush linux". Apparently if you speak out against the problems the GPL causes you are attempting to crush linux. Whatever happened to allowing reasonable and rational debate?

Realist - I see you've been reading the spin on the news from the Linux community.
The fact of the matter is the GPL is a cancer, that was the intent behind it's writing and it puzzles me how OSS zealots dodge this debate by using different examples depending on how they want to spin the issue. When you have people out there advocating that the Government should mandate the use of the GPL license for all software it uses, you are going to see lobbying from Microsoft(and other companies) against that. Why is this some sort of surprise to you, and why do you try to spin this as some sort of ethics issue? It's unethical to make money, I guess. It's unethical to not support the rights of software developers, I guess. For some reason Microsoft and developers are just supposed to roll over for the GPL juggernaut and let it replace our livelihoods. You and the Linux community have a very strange view of what ethics means considering most of the arguments are based upon the distortion of truth. |

Realist - "I'm sorry you feel threatened by the GPL, but its here to stay, so you'll just have to deal with it."
Not if it doesn't start resulting in profitable companies. The only solution I've seen offered by GPL zealots for this problem is government subsidies. Nationalizing software development isn't going to get very far in Congress. But that last sentence pretty much sums up what is wrong with your arguments. On one hand you claim the GPL isn't a cancer, and then on the other hand you pretty much admit it is. |
