Microsoft has released a command-line tool named QChain.exe that gives system administrators the ability to safely chain hotfixes together. Hotfix Chaining is when you install multiple hotfixes without rebooting between each install. Without this tool, the only supported method is to reboot between each hotfix installation. 57 KB. | ||

| Why do we have to reboot at all? Most of these hotfixes I apply are to IIS. Is Microsoft not aware that IIS runs as a service and can be stopped and restarted? Sigh... |

| Honestly, I think Microsoft is simply lazy. There are obviously ways of insuring that a DLL in use is released by shutting down processes and service. We do this all the time in deploying our internally developed applications. |

| A security hotfix is serious business. While it is easy to determine if a DLL has any current handles open (SysInternals' HandleEx does this quite nicely) in a dynamic environment, it's dangerous to go swapping out critical security DLLs and hope it all works. While there may be some solution to the rebooting problem, on any OS, when applying critical security patches, a reboot is recommended (yes, even Unix). |

| Actually, so far, if you install a hotfix on Win2002 Server, you do not need a reboot.... I didn't even need one when I was changing drivers.... really wierd that they didn't put that technology into the Home and Pro vers. |

| daz, it's really quite easy... You shut down services that may have it in use. Try to copy it in place. Then restart services. If you get an error saying that DLL is in use when trying to copy it in place... Well you better copy it in place during a reboot. Again, it's laziness on the part of Microsoft. I'm glad to hear from CPUGuy that they are addressing this in Win2002 Server. |

| Clustering is Microsoft's high-availibility solution. Single-box big-iron solutions are for IBM and Sun to waffle over. |
