Stung by criticism of its current offerings, Microsoft seems to be pinning its hopes for a truly "trustworthy" operating system on a future version of Windows, code-named Palladium. Don’t expect to see that OS anytime soon. Palladium is a long-term project that requires not only a new operating system, but new computers as well. How long Microsoft won't say. I'm thinking 2006 or later. | ||

"What if Palladium is just as buggy as the rest of Microsoft's code?"
Even though MS has produced some darn fine code in the past couple years, they've got this mountain to climb. "As buggy as the rest of Microsoft's code"--that's a pretty myopic assessment of the entire product line MS offers. What full-featured browser is more stable than IE? What full-featured word processor is more solid than Word? Are 5 9's guarantees for Windows 2000 servers from different hardware OEMs characteristic of a bug-ridden code base? Yes, these are all comments on stability, but much of their software is pretty solid in other, less easily-guaged areas, too. And of course, MS is not the only company that has bugs in their code. MS did produce a mix of some great and some awful software over the years, and they have that burden to bear. But, I think it does a disservice to the author's credibility to favor old trends in his reporting of the company over their current trend, which has lasted for some time now. |

At first, ZDNet's overbearing bias was a mere annoyance. It wasn't hurting anything other than Microsoft's PR.
However, now it's hurting the consumers. Because of ZDNet's agenda, people are lulled into a false sense of hatred towards Microsoft. While MS is taking all the flame for TCPA and Palladium, IBM, Sony, Intel, and many other companies are quietly sticking DRM and rights-violating software and hardware into all sorts of consumer electronic products. Folks, at this time, right now MS IS NOT THE ENEMY. Perhaps they will be when Palladium is released, but right now, YOU'RE BEING DISTRACTED. |

I had a similar occurance 4 weeks ago. We had been working on a website for 6 months using ASP, COM, SQL Server when our client came to use and said their IT department was removing all their W2k Servers. We agreed to convert all the code to JSP to use on their IT dept's linux/apache/tomcat server (We charged them for if of course :). Anyway, we went over to their offices the day of the install at 12 PM, CD in hand. It took the Admin, who is not even remotely incompetent, over 2 hours to setup the website and the database and get it working. When we first got there I asked them why they were getting rid of their NT Servers and he said that it was too expensive and not secure. When we left I told him I could have setup the website/database/dns/e-mail in less then 10 minutes and had the site completely locked down on a W2K box. He wasn't happy and neither was my client (with their IT dept) who we charged for the install because I ended up having to configure the server myself at the end. This is just another case of closed-minded admins screwing their company because of their biased opinion. We see it all the time, its pretty sad. |
