Lindows.com plans flat-fees for OEMs | |

Linux distributor Lindows.com Inc is to introduce a flat-fee licensing plan to computer manufacturers for its forthcoming LindowsOS operating system. In order to increase the number of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), system builders, systems integrators and value-added resellers taking on its new desktop OS, the San Diego, California-based company is introducing subscription-based licensing for systems builders. Instead of the usual per-unit fees, systems builders will pay a $500 monthly membership fee, which will entitle them to install the LindowsOS operating system on an unlimited number of computer systems. Lindows.com is also stating that there will be no volume commitments for system builders that sign up to the program, and no software activation codes requiring tracking and auditing. | ||

| I can't wait till Lindows has been out of a while and no one cares. It seams like this always happens. They stir up a lot of news now, but just wait a couple monthes and you will hear nothing about them. |

Lindows is interesting (I got to play with it a bit here). The problem is, it won't run Outlook 2000 in CW mode, which a lot of companies will require. If they can fix that, then they'll have an actual selling point (Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint all run fine.)
Additionally, they need to add in the ability to browse/map network (which is impossible with the current version.) As you see, there's a lot of work yet to be done. |

For Outlook, don't forget that the best way to connect to it probably is not through WINE, but instead use Ximian's Evolution while in Linux. Notice also that we 're talking aout SMB/CIFS and MS's crappy LDAP implementation, and Outlook's insanely horrible datastore--all elements which may be affected by the ultimate outcome of the antitrust trial...
Of course, Longhorn will outmode all of this and will probably be avaible five years before the case is settled, but.... |
