Mira, a portable wireless flat panel display designed by Microsoft for home users, will not be compatible with the Windows XP Home Edition, a company official confirmed Tuesday. Since the consumer version of the operating system does not include a remote desktop protocol, the device will only work with Windows XP Professional. Microsoft is currently working on a solution, said Eddie Wu, senior director for Mircrosoft's Embedded Systems Group in Asia. | ||

Remote Assistance is descended from the desktop sharing feature of NetMeeting. You can only connect to Remote Assistance from another Windows XP machine.
Remote Desktop is the proper name for the Terminal Services implementation in Windows XP Professional. You can connect to Remote Desktop from any RDP client, including DOS, Windows 9X, and Windows 2000 machines. (DOS support is from third-party, not Microsoft, and some features of RDP 5.0 are not available on downlevel clients, but there is no such thing as a downlevel client for Remote Assistance because backward compatibility with NetMeeting was not preserved.) The difference between Remote Desktop and full Terminal Services in Windows 2000 Server and Windows .NET Server is that Remote Desktop is single-user, but Terminal Services is multi-user. When you connect via Remote Desktop, the console of a Windows XP Professional computer automatically locks (if it was logged in). If the console user unlocks it (or logs in), the remote user is dropped. This simplifies licensing as well as technical issues with user profiles. |
