Microsoft's "Mira" concept of a detachable computer monitor that can be taken around the house may first attract tech-savvy power users, but price cuts may be needed to attract a broader customer base. Mira, announced by chairman Bill Gates at the beginning of this year, is aimed squarely at household consumers who want the full power of a desktop computer but also want to surf the web or read email while lying on the couch.

This is an awesome idea. If it's not too expensive, sign me up for one of these!
BTW, what is Sun doing? Oh that's right, they're still trying to convince everyone that we should all have thin computers and connect to massive Sun servers. Yeah right.
In a few years when Sun files Chapter 11, I'm sure they'll blame it all on Evil Microsoft's monopoly rather than their own poor strategy.

I've seen versions where it's a 2nd monitor. You have your main monitor, and the Mira sits off to the side. It's either off, or serves as a 2nd display until you pick it up.
I've been considering getting a cheap laptop and wireless so that I can surf in bed or while watching TV downstairs, but I may just hold off and get a mira!

Umm, I have two 15" LCD monitors on my main desktop and I've got to tell ya it is the coolest thing. I have a 20" monitor at work and I'd rather have the dual 15's... Don't do CAD, it's just great for web browsing, writing letters, using MS Money, everything.
I'm with daz on this, I had been thinking about buying a laptop to use in the living room, but I may just wait for this. If it's under $600 I'll be interested, if it's over $1000 forget it.

#9: What if you could use your 21" at your desktop, then grab the 15" LCD and go sit in the lazy boy and surf the web while you watch TV?
For me, 15" would be all I need while surfing on the couch or in the chair. I agree, I wouldn't want it to be my main monitor.

#8 Mira runs Windows CE.NET, has an onboard CPU and memory. It already runs a kind of advanced form of terminal services. I think it has more than enough brains to run notepad. It is probably equivalent in power to a Pocket PC. It is just limited in use by its planned market position. Besides the LCD, it is the onboard logic that drives its price.

#8 - I understand that. I guess that's why I feel I wouldn't be willing to pay much more than the cost of a second monitor for it. If it's much more than that, I'm just better off getting a cheap laptop because of the versatility.
I had been considering getting a used PIII-500 based laptop, and then essentially using it as a terminal services client. I already do that here at work between a PII-550 in one building connected to a PIII-866 in another and it is almost like being there locally.

The article says Mira will have a battery life of four to eight hours. It displays data from your PC using wireless networking technology like 802.11.
Check http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mira/
for more info.
