Microsoft May Face Fines in Europe | |

The European Union (news - web sites)'s head office said Monday Microsoft Corp. could face new fines for possible violations of European data protection laws. EU spokesman Jonathan Todd said the charges against Microsoft related to its free-of-charge .NET Passport service on the Internet, which is used for purchases, playing games and banking transactions. Todd said EU governments and consumer groups expressed concern about the service to the European Commission (news - web sites), which then passed them on to national regulators. He added that several EU governments had launched a probe into the service, and said each of the EU's 15 member nations could impose separate fines against Microsoft in this case. Microsoft already faces another, unrelated EU antitrust investigation into its product line, focussing primarily on Microsoft's Windows program. | ||

| Well UK already stated that they don't see a problem witn Passport and other States are oriented in the same directions. Keep in mind that in Europe the law protecting the privacy is much stiffer than here in the US; basically each and every US company willing to sell in Europe have to modify the standards applicable here to more restrictive ones. |

| This is true #4 but the 1st and the freedom of speech were designed to protect us from an over intrusive Governement, not to give companies agreen light for calling me at supper time. Even worse is that is the fact that I pay to have my phone # unlistedlisted in the phone book; I complained with Bellsouth and I was told that in order to be pulled out from the listings available to all these people I have to pay more money. I mean are we kidding or what? Is the State of Florida so focused to protect me against MS (?!?!?!) that this scandal is going unnoticed? |

Alex - This quote from that article is particularly disturbing... "EU officials refused to say exactly what parts of the EU privacy rules Microsoft was violating"
Fritzly - I do realize that US privacy laws are weak, but this is really the fault of US citizens who have not voiced their demands loudly enough, so the corporate interests have been able to lobby for things such as the automatic opt-in of the GLB act, and so forth. |

| Getting back to the Privacy Policy in the EU there are huge differences from State to State. To give you an example when I receive my phone bill the last three digits of the numbers I called appear as ***. This is to "supposedly" protect the identity of the other party and this in spite of the fact that being on my bill I obviously called that person. |

Since when has anyone in Europe ever cooperated or helped anyone else in Europe? Never! The EU was doomed before it started. |
