Is 7.0 Netscape's Lucky Number? | |

Remember the browser battle? It may be back. The epic battle between Netscape Communications, now a unit of AOL Time Warner, and Microsoft over whose Web-browsing software would dominate is just a memory. And in case you missed it, Microsoft won. The Internet Explorer browser, riding on the coattails of the Windows operating system, ultimately overwhelmed the once-dominant Netscape Navigator and Netscape Communicator. But choice has remained nevertheless. Netscape is still around--and still pumping out new releases of its software, the latest of which to see the light of day is version 7.0. As part of the AOL empire, the Netscape browser has yet to be used as a serious anti-Microsoft weapon. The America Online service still uses Internet Explorer as its default Web browser and AOL hasn't said if that arrangement is likely to change. Netscape's current mission is to renew the attack on Explorer and try to erode its huge market lead. | ||

I wonder about the popup suppression option. I think if microsoft puts that into IE they will receive a boatload of bad press, but yet I suspect users would love it.

I prefer Mozilla because it hasn't been molested by AOL.
With that said, Mozilla/Netscape 7 are VERY impressive packages. The combination of Tabbed browsing and group bookmarking make Mozilla the most convenient and efficient browser you can use today. One other area of Mozilla that has been overlooked is the truly superb email cllient. It's possible it hasn't been commented on much because the email client in Netscape 4.x is _so_ bad. This is a shame. The Email Client in Mozilla 1.0 RCx is the most powerful, flexible email client I have ever used. Multiple Accounts? What what was once a true sour point in Netscape is now one of it's brightest features. You can create any number of any type of email accounts you want. You can have MULTIPLE smtp servers plugged in, and attach the one you want to any email account you want. It maintains storage folders for each individual mail account. It allows your sent mail copies to go to any storage folder you want. Of course, it has the usual community Local Mail storage area for archiving. And LDAP works!!! This was a very, very problematic area for Netscape 6, and prevented it's roll-out in many a corporate environment. And, unlike Netscape 4.x (don't know about 6), it finally maintains proper html formatting for text cut from web pages and pasted into email's. I would like to see a little work done on picture pasting, but that's about it. IMHO, Mozilla is a real winner. TL |
