Microsoft issues bounty for OS-less PC buyers | |

Microsoft may not have succeeded in persuading OEMs and system builders to "decline politely" all perverse requests for PCs lacking a pre-installed (preferably Microsoft) OS, but it's shifted to a new approach. It's now bribing system builders to turn in anyone who bids on naked boxes, ostensibly so it can harass these poor, twisted madmen directly from Beast Central. Through the new Microsoft OEM Western Region Pilot Program, the company is offering glamorous prizes to anyone who sends in any of their RFQs (Requests For Quote) that don't include an OS for each machine. | ||

How many of you, when purchasing a new PC, submit a request for quote? Raise your hands. No one? Just as I thought. What the register so innocently (yeah, right) forgot to mention in their headline was that MS is doing this to corporations, not the little guy. If a corporation buys 400 PCs without an OS on it, what do you think they're going to do? That's right, install 400 pirated copies of Windows. That's all MS is trying to prevent. |

#14: As always, I'm sure this story is blown WAY out of proportion by The Register. As if Microsoft were going to go around collecting all this data and prosecuting every single individual or company. If you look at the facts, it's probably when there's an order of 50+ CPUs at one time and a special request for no OS was submitted with no good reason (they didn't mention an alternate OS, etc). |
