#1: The 40 million were total sales. OEM purchases count toward sales even when the product sits in a warehouse. My own little shop sold a custom all-in-one with ten point touch quickly. A rebuilt custom tower with Windows 8 hasn't had a single person express interest, even with the price knocked down to $140. Not really a "sample size" at all. But, my gut tells me Windows 8 will do fine on touch screen devices. Other devices will move slower until people just buy it because enough mods exist to make it seem more familiar, or Microsoft changes the install so that non-touchscreen machines have the option at setup to boot to the desktop. The start screen doesn't need to go away. It just needs to hide.
